We have talked before about writing as a process of thinking and learning. As you are writing you are still working out what you are saying and what your conclusions are. First drafts are usually, therefore, pretty incoherent to others. As we discussed in another post here, they are written for you (the writer) and not for readers.

In this post on the Explorations of Style Blog, Rachel Cayley discusses this some more and explains why it is important to (1) expect that your writing will need extensive revision and (2) allow time for that in your planning.
