In this paper on the craft of writing Lorelei Lingard discusses research papers as if they were dramas. I found this a really helpful metaphor. She says that while the methods and results report the study fully and accurately, the introduction and discussion must persuasively tell the story of the research. She explains some different storylines that the drama may take, and how to think about the characters in the story to ensure your introduction and discussion are coherent.

It’s a short and very worthwhile read. Check it out here.
